Annual conference of LPA 2016: Modernity, Postmodernity, Contemporaneity

Speakers are invited to reflect on the notions of modernity, postmodernity and contemporaneity. According to J. Habermas, modernity becomes a subject of philosophy in the end of the 18th century allowing the formation of philosophical discourse of modernity. This discourse has a lot of touching points and intersections with the discourse of aesthetics even though the two do not fully correspond. The notion of modernity becomes an important point of orientation for sociology which introduces a paradigm of modernisation in the 1970s thus enabling the analysis of social and political aspects of the restructuring within a society.

In 1979 J.-F. Lyotard published The Postmodern Condition thus facilitating the wide use of the notion of postmodernity. Some authors (Lyotard, Jameson, Bauman, Žižek) concentrate on analysing cultural and philosophical differences between modernity and postmodernity, while others, such as Habermas, view modernity as a project that has not yet reached its end. The art theoretic Bourriaud claims that postmodernity is replaced by altermodernity which is nothing else but overcharged modernity. Agamben, on his part, insists on speaking about contemporaneity which is marked by its messianic relation to time.

The conference is aimed at the reconsideration of the mentioned distinctions and their philosophical, aesthetical and social aspects.

Tačiau kartu materializmas pasirodo ir kaip į ateitį orientuotas filosofijos pažadas, skelbiantis apie naujas politinio įvykio, mokslų raidos, materialaus kūno ar objektų ontologijos galimybes. Kartu materializmas yra ir mūsų kultūrinis paveldas, kuris, įdiegtas ideologine istorinio ir dialektinio materializmo forma, vis dar atkakliai reiškiasi kaip “humanitarinių mokslų metodologija”.
